MISSION

Abolitionist Sanctuary is a national coalition comprised of Black-serving churches, civic organizations, and communities that are trained in abolitionist principles. We unite to address the moral crisis surrounding mass incarceration and the criminalization of impoverished Black motherhood. Our collective commitment as abolitionists emphasizes radical investments in liberation and communal prosperity through education, consulting, and civic engagement. We dedicate ourselves to equipping faith and civic leaders with the tools necessary to apply abolitionist principles aimed at repairing, restoring, and rebuilding just and equitable communities. In our role as consultants, we guide organizations in implementing solutions that enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within their workplaces. Through community organizing, we create transformative justice strategies that elevate civic engagement while affirming the inherent value of underrepresented groups, particularly impoverished Black mothers.

VISION

Our vision is to cultivate a faith-based abolitionist movement dedicated to repairing harms, restoring relationships, and reconstructing a more just and equitable society where impoverished Black mothers can thrive free from punishment, policing, and incarceration.

VALUES

We adhere to a 5C value system rooted in the survival strategies of Black mothers who strive to support their families amidst interconnected systems of oppression. Our values stand in stark opposition to the vices of condemnation, neglect, conformity, cowardice, and individualism—elements that uphold and perpetuate carceral systems.

MEMBERS

Members of Abolitionist Sanctuary actively engage in building a national coalition committed to confronting the moral crisis provoked by mass incarceration and the criminalization of impoverished Black motherhood. As part of our membership community, we apply abolitionist principles and transformative justice strategies to repair, restore, and create a more just and equitable society. We devise solutions that recognize the inherent worth of underrepresented groups, particularly impoverished Black mothers.
